Camp Day One and what came before
At the Balandra Camp — Spent a lovely day in Trinidad with some friends that I haven’t seen in a long time. They was there to meet me at the airport. I really didn’t expect to get that kind of welcome. Especially seeing how me flight did come in at 5 o’clock in the judgment morning. But them was there and I was glad. The rain was pouring already and me was real tired after the long and dry flight.
Why them plane people so stingy? The only thing them did want to give me plenty of was fake smile. The little cup a tea they did give me was the size of a tablespoon. No space for the milk and sugar so I had to drink it black. But, Lord! did I laugh in the man face when he try to give me this tablespoon of tea! When I dry me eyes the man didn’t even want to give me fake smile no more. Hai!
But the friends them man, Fiona and Cle-Anne, them treat me real good. Fiona mother, Aunty Sheryl, she feed me till I most was ready to burst. Every 15 minutes they tell me eat some more, something new and something Trini. What a good time. We lime round the place little bit, then I had to crash, cause the 5 o’clock flight was catching up with me, so I had to catch myself a little bit.
I still tired now. Seeing as that is my everyday condition, so I shouldn’t be too surprised by that.
But this Balandra is something else man. It so far behind God’s back that if he did get one itch in the back here he couldn’t reach to scratch it. It pretty still though. However, I must say that a lot of what they told us to expect didn’t really pan out. We got no internet, no caffeinated coffee, and no desks. Yes, it is a writers retreat. They tell us say they will get us the desk and thing today. The internet coming on Tuesday. Dialup. Can you imagine that?
The food is good so far. It’s all vegetarian. See Camp Balandra is a 7th day Adventist place, and they don’t eat certain types of meat. Like pork and thing. We had veggie burgers for dinner last night. At least they giving us substitutes. This morning they gave us Veggie ham… They say the chef is “cordon bleu” trained. I don’t know what that means for the rabbit food…
The Trinidad heat is something else too. I think I will start taking like 10 baths a day. Before I start with that though, I think they need to show me where the laundry and thing is…
Enough complaining! Make me go write something.
