One-way Ticket.
It’s over and done with. The moving anyway. I finished the last of it on Tuesday. I even canceled the internet. Ended up at the Greyhound bus terminal with two suitcases and a small plant in a green plastic pot. Judging by the looks I got, I was quite the curiosity. Who travels with a plant anyway? I went up to the cashier with my plant in hand to get a ticket.
“One-way student ticket to Toronto please.”
“One-way” is such a nice modifier. You have no idea how good it felt to say it.
Don’t get me wrong now. Ottawa has been good to me. If only because it contains the only school that would take me into an MA program. On the other hand though, it feels like I’ve spent the last nine months getting the crap beat out of me. Yeah, there are always highs and lows, good and bad, pros and cons, a zenith and a corresponding nadir to any period of time, yet I feel that Ottawa has yet to provide with much in the way of high-lights. If there is a word that could summarize my time there thus far, it would be “struggle.” Again, this is not to say that I want to quit, it merely means that I’m happy to have a pause in between rounds.
And the fight continues. One more paper to go and this has enough back story to make a couple of movie-of-the-week specials. For a number of reasons my motivation is completely gone. I just want this year to be done. Working on this paper, it feels like I haven’t left Ottawa completely, like the year is still following me, haunting my dreams.
Soon. I tell myself. It will really be over.

Congratulations on nearly finishing up Year 1, Ward! I’m assuming that if all goes well you’ll be graduating by this time next year, correct? In the meantime, have a great summer.

Quite Correct.
Looking forward to it. Thanks. (btw I’ll get to the form you put up on mentalslavery.com when the essay is done.
