The April Fool
Well. Where has the time gone? 4 months you say? Ha. They tell me its spring too. I’ll believe that when I see it.
I just sent off an application to the CBIE. I’m trying to be their International Student of the Year. Do you think I’ll get it? See, what you had to do is write an imaginary letter that says how wonderful your Canadian University experience has been and all the good things you gained from it and if they like it they’ll give you 500 smackers. What do I really have to lose? I would post it here, but since they may run a google search on the text I may just get accused of plagiarizing myself…
Came on the 6:45 AM bus to Ottawa. Spent the weekend in Toronto. Saw Canstage’s production of ‘Fire‘. A riff on the lives of real-life cousins Jerry Lee Lewis and Jimmy Lee Swaggart. One becomes a rock-star and the other becomes a flawed tele-evangelist. In the play they are rendered as brothers. The result is a highly uneven work. Ted Dykstra who plays the rock star brother, Cale Blackwell, is amazing though. The rock and roll numbers are impressive. Anyone who can play with their butt deserves kudos. However, the play only finds it’s energy in those sequences. It’s D.O.A. anywhere else. The dialogue is flat, the preaching goes on forever and they just beat you over the head with the George W. comparisons at the end. AND it’s nearly three hours long. Not the best way to spend your time. My advice is to avoid this one.
It was of interest to me though because in a lot of ways its similar to a play that I’m writing. Well, a play that I’m re-writing. ‘Pray for Dollars!’ This is the play I hope to finish in Trinidad. The conflict between the two brothers and their father that is central to ‘Fire’ is also key to my story. What did Eliot say about mature poets and theft? At least in this case, I think I learned some of what to avoid.
Anyway. Here’s hoping that no one pulls out a chair from under you.
Happy April Fools.
