Towing Jehovah
The school year is upon me. Or so it feels. 10 more days and I’ll be swamped and struggling to breathe. Not looking forward to it. The last few months sans school have been wonderful. Yes, there were a number of things I didn’t do… That part-time job comes to mind. But there were also a number of things that I did do. Finished a couple of paintings, wrote half of a play, found an apt, moved…
I just finished a very cool and blasphemous book. “Towing Jehovah” by James Morrow. My background as a former Jehovah’s Witness made it even more enjoyable. See, God dies and his two-mile long body falls into the Atlantic. The angels, who are dying from grief, want it buried and have hewn out a tomb in the Arctic. Enter Anthony Van Horne a super tanker captain, who is commissioned by the Vatican for the biggest tow job in human history… Intrigued? I recommend it highly.
I realized too now, that I’ve read a heck of a lot of books this summer. Thanks in part to the wonders of audio books and my love of washing the dishes.
The list is in no particular order, just the titles of the books as I remember them…
- The Audacity of Hope – Barack Obama
- My Life – Bill Clinton
- Living History – Hillary Clinton
- The Power of Now – Eckhart Tolle
- Freakonomics – Stephen Levitt
- The Tipping Point – Malcolm Gladwell
- Blink – Malcolm Gladwell
- The 8th Habit – Steven Covey
- Failed States – Noam Chomsky
- The Measure of a Man – Sidney Poitier
- Confessions of an Economic Hit Man – John Perkins
- Towing Jehovah – James Morrow
- Diary of Souls – Ian Strachan (A Bahamian Play)
- The Children’s Teeth – Nicolette Bethel (An unpublished Bahamian play)
- Da Web Shop Horror – Clarence Rolle (Another unpublished Bahamian play)
- 1491 – Charles C. Mann (still listening to it)
I can hardly believe this list myself… True, some of the audio books were abridged, like Bill and Hillary’s, but honestly I don’t think the unabridged would have been any more informative. I have to put up my list of movies seen too. Cause Lord knows I’ve done a lot of movie watching this summer. Where did I find the time?

Half a play, 16 books, a couple paintings, Ward, that’s darn good and quite an accomplishment!
So far, I’ve read 10 books, wrote a 10page (long) poem, and changed over 600 dirty diapers!
*Wow, new layout, hmmm…*

Washing dishes gets one through a lot of audio books.
So does driving to and from work. Too bad I’m broke for the time being and have been banned from buying more stuff until further notice.
I used the summer to catch up on my Ondaatje, among other things.
