Cold May

Hello, It’s me again. I haven’t been here in a while. again. I guess that is the only constant around here: my continual neglect for my webspace. I have yet to treat it like a full hobby and area for growth. Experimentation anyone?

I ended up buying my domain names from the most unreputable company ever. Registerfly.com. They are now being shut down by ICANN and neither side is pretty pleased. Not to mention the thousands of customers, like me, stuck in the middle.

What’s wrong with them? Well for starters they don’t answer support tickets and work very hard at making life difficult for you. Kind of the wrong approach for a business. I should have moved from them sooner especially when I could never successfully finish a creditcard transaction with them… Domain names have been a pretty low priority thing for me… I’m more concerned about the hosting. (And I’ve had some bad experience there too – Mesopia.com? I shudder to recall) However, when one of my sites, Kinlakou.com, went missing and I couldn’t get it back from the dead – this was around 6 months ago – I knew that I had a problem. The people at Registerfly haven’t responded to my support requests yet. Please do yourself a favor and avoid them like the plague… Happy to report that my sites are all safely away from them…

Went to the Victoria Day fireworks tonight. Wonderful atmosphere out there in the boondocks. Found Anita and Nick and their friends and had a great time for the entire ten minutes that the display lasted. Yup. Not that long. I guess New Years will be better. :)

The summer of the big threes hasn’t shaped up so well for me. Saw Shrek 3 on Friday. It was ok. Cute, but lacking soul and purpose. There was no dramatic tension, no point to the proceedings. There were too many dead scenes that didn’t go anywhere or have any point. They didn’t develop character or develop plot, and most of them weren’t funny. An hour and a half of cute slapstick and some bathroom humor. Add in some overwrought and unclear messages about the meaning of parenting and you have an uninspiring sequel. Lucky for me, I saw it with stimulating company, so it could have been 90 minutes of paint drying and I wouldn’t have minded much. :) But they could have done so much better. I find that when it comes to toons, no one can touch Pixar. I’m looking forward to their upcoming film Ratatouille to see a real animated film.

Spider-man 3 also sucked. They got half of the movie right. The movie turned to camp and crap mid-way through the second act when Peter Parker started playing the piano. In the previous two films, I don’t recall seeing him look at a piano, much less be able to bang out ragtime. The venom storyline was rushed and cheesy. How’s this for super villain dialogue: “you hate the spider. I hate the spider. Let’s team up and kill him.” Yup. Sony’s got 8 year-olds writing the scripts. I guess child labor becomes a cost cutting option when your budget is in excess of 250 million dollars.

My take: they should have left Venom for Spiderman 4. End this movie with Peter gradually heading towards the dark side, enjoying the power of the alien suit but gradually setting himself up to be isolated, vulnerable and alone, and in 4 fully develop the Venom character. Even visually their new black spidey suit looks very little like Venom’s black and white outfit. Those who grew up on the comics know that the Venom suit looks just like Spidey’s black suit, by changing one they had to change the other. Unless they pulled a subtle morphing of the suits over two movies; that could have been effective. Also they seemed to forget at times the fluid nature of the black suit and couldn’t decide if it was fabric or quicksilver.

They had more than enough story-line to untangle with a very interesting and well acted Sandman plus Harry Osbourne’s return as the Green Goblin. The rush job Sam Raimi did here was reminiscent of the infamous Batman and Robin. Suffice to say that I will not be in line to see Spidey 4.

Ok. So I’ve said enough for now. Hopefully more later…
