Habits and RSS

Do this a few more times and I think i’ll have a record. Nothing new to report. Same ole two an six as they say back home. I’m hoping that I’m able to go back when I want. So much in the air right now. Uncertainty reigns! (Insert evil laugh here)

But for a long time I’ve been meaning to tell you about RSS. After reading so much about this wonderful technology, and even sporting it on my own website for over two years I figured that I would finally submit to curiosity and download a stand-alone RSS aggregator (as they are called) and try it out to see how this thing works. I’m a convert now. It’s really a useful technology. It tells you when your favorite websites have been updated with new information. Like your friends blogs. You don’t have to go there every day, or once a week or whenever in the hope of finding new information, with an RSS program you know exactly when their site has been updated. I can even read the actual blog entry (most of it anyway) right in the RSS window. That’s a huge time saver. I love it.

Apparently RSS is also the brawn behind the whole podcasting phenomenon, which I also recommend. I’m not saying this because I’m a total Apple geek either, do yourself a favor and get iTunes and check out their collection of podcasts. The word “podcast” comes from a melding of “iPod” and “Broadcast” obviously. A portmanteau as Lewis Carrol would say. Its interesting, Apple is initially criticised for not putting an FM tuner into their ultra popular MP3 device and radio bends itself to the whims of the iPod. Thats what you call power.

That point aside, I subscribe to “Democracy Now” with Amy Goodman, which is unembedded non-corporate news; Highly recommended; and the “Roger, Rick and Marilyn” CHUM FM Toronto morning show. Its so cool to listen to a morning show at night. Those jokers always make me laugh… :D Every week I also check out Ebert and Roeper movie reviews. I haven’t been out to see a movie in months, but I still listen to the reviews. I just love it when they disagree passionately over a film. :) But if you don’t like iTunes, and I know there exist quite a few Apple haters out there… you can find other programs that you can download to get you up to speed on the whole podcasting phenomenon. It’s like TiVo for radio. No more running (surfing?) between websites!! And the best part is that its free!

Enough advertising for me. I find it interesting the stuff I find to say when I have nothing to say. Odd isn’t it. ;) later.
